Item description:
This is one of the series of mid-century Travel Tips guide booklets published by the now-defunct TWA Airlines, for the edification of American travelers to TWA destinations around the world.

This particular booklet was published in 1956, only 11 years after the end of WWII in Europe, and describes the post-war, divided conditions in West Germany.

"West Germany is again taking its place among the free nations of the world," the book notes. "Accommodations are back to pre-war standards ... All cities and towns have pure drinking water, conforming to the standard set by the U.S. Army."

At the time, TWA flew direct to Frankfurt. The guide booklet describes travel destinations in the Black Forest, the Rhine Valley, the Bavarian Alps, and the beaches of the North Sea and the Baltic, and lists the German sporting and cultural events and festivals for 1956.

That year, the best hotels in Germany cost a maximum of $8 US per night, just a bit more than a Hummel figurine, which ran $4 to $6 each.

The booklet also contains Mary Gordon´s Tips for Women Travelers, which seem to be concerned primarily with shopping.

"For all that is modern in Art, Fashion and Entertainment, visit Dusseldorf," she writes. "It has been referred to as ´the German Paris´ and is a delight to women tourists."

This would be a great addition to any TWA or mid-century ephemera collection!
